DIGITAL NOSE JOBS

Many high-tech-savvy plastic surgeons use digital-imaging software to demonstrate to patients approximately what they can expect to look like after surgery.

Among the latest entries in this software market is FaceTouchUp, which allows users to transform photos of themselves or others.  Whether this product will make a dent in the medical marketplace remains to be seen, but in the meantime it’s available for anyone to experiment with online.

For fun, In Your Face gave virtual rhinoplasties to two celebrities, enlarging the nose of Simon Cowell and shrinking the nose of Donald Trump (below).

The software doesn’t easily allow drastic changes, so the transformations are rather subtle.

In the same general category as FaceTouchUp is the virtual hair-replacement software that Dr. Alan Bauman used to turn your blogger from bald to coiffed.

Simon Cowell bullied Gordon Ramsay into using Botox

July 13th, 2009, 6:00 am by Colin Stewart

BATTLE OF WILLS

Ordinarily, “Hell’s Kitchen” chef Gordon Ramsay is no pushover. But “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell is even more strong-willed, and a big fan of Botox too.

So when the two met, Cowell turned Ramsay into a Botox user.

“Yeah, it’s Simon’s fault,” Ramsay said in a recent interview.  “I had lunch with him and he leaned over and started prodding my chin saying, ‘Mate, you’ve got to do something about this.’  …

“I mean, I know I’ve always had a face like Freddy Krueger, but more and more people were commenting on my chin. A make-up artist actually said to me, ‘God, what happened to you? Did you have an accident when you were little? Did you fly through the windscreen with no seatbelt on?’ ”

Ramsay didn’t try to eliminate the wrinkles in his forehead, which are part of his distinctive look. But even after Botox injections in his chin, no one noticed any improvement — including his mother, he said.

“When I was talking to my mum about all that’s been going on … she said, ‘Keep your chin up’. I said, ‘Yeah, well at least I’ve got a new one of those’, but it went over her head.”

Cowell, by the way, says he thinks that using Botox is as routine as using toothpaste, but insists he’ll never color his hair.

For Simon Cowell, Botox is like toothpaste

April 24th, 2009, 6:00 am by Colin Stewart

BOTOX ISN’T UNUSUAL

simon-cowell-032008-300pxA new quote from Simon Cowell provides vivid language about Botox, but no change of attitude by the demanding judge of “American Idol”:

To me, Botox is no more unusual than toothpaste. It works. You do it once a year. Who cares?

Wow! Once a year means that Mr. Perfection’s injections last a lot longer than the four to six months that most people experience.

Presumably he brushes his teeth more often.

But different people have different ideas about what’s acceptable and what’s off limits.  For Cowell, hair coloring is the cosmetic enhancement that’s out of bounds. He says:

“Yes, I’ve had Botox, but not in an obsessive way. I’ve never dyed my hair, ever and I wouldn’t.”

Botox confessions from Brooke, 12 more celebrities

November 20th, 2008, 6:12 am by Colin Stewart

Jenny McCarthyBotox has become so common that many Hollywood celebrities don’t bother disputing the fact that they’re using it.

Case in point: the Nov. 24 edition of People magazine, which gives a run-down of more than a dozen actresses and other celebrities who are Botox believers – and talkative too.

These wrinkle-fighters range in age from Jenny McCarthy (pictured at right) and Jennie Garth, both 36, to Annie Potts and David Hasselhoff, both 56.

That list doesn’t even include the most prominent example of a Botox backer. She is actress Virginia Madsen, 43, official celebrity spokeswoman for Botox.

Many of the actresses not only say they’ve been injected, they also have advice about how to use it. Several share the same advice – ask the doctor to inject only small amounts of Botox so your face won’t freeze up:

SMALL QUANTITIES

Jenny McCarthy, 36, B-movie actress, Playboy model and author, says she makes sure her doctor injects only a modest amount. “If you overdo, it looks bad,” she says. That requires her to return for injections every two months, rather than the usual three to four months. “I believe in just a little bit. It allows you to keep that mobility in your face. It’s a great little secret.”

Sharon Osbourne, 56, of “The Osbournes: Loud and Dangerous” is a longtime Botox user. “A lot of women [went] too far,” she says. “If you take the natural lines out of your face, you look like you’ve been starched.”

Vanessa Williams, 45, of “Ugly Betty”: “I use it very sparingly,” she says. “I want to look natural.” She schedules Botox shots for every three months, she says. “I get it so I look serene.”

Jennie Garth, 36, of “90210” says her first doctor injected her with too much Botox, so she asked for a different dose the next time around: “I said I wanted way less. I don’t want my face to change.”

Brooke ShieldsDaisy Fuentes, 42, former MTV host: “There’s a right time for things like Botox as you get older. As long as you don’t go overboard with it, then you’re good.”

IFFY

Brooke Shields (pictured at right), 43, says she tried Botox once and is undecided whether she will do so again. “Talk to me in a year,” she says.

ROUTINE

Annie Potts, 56, formerly of “Designing Women,” uses Botox and predicts it will continue to grow in popularity because actresses need “to look as young as you can, for as long as you can, so you can pay the rent.”

Simon Cowell, 49, of “American Idol”: “To me, Botox is no more unusual than toothpaste. It works; you do it once a year. Who cares?”

David Hasselhoff, 56, of “America’s Got Talent”: “I have had Botox. Everyone has. It’s a shot. It takes out the frown. I did it before a movie.”

Linda EvangelistaLinda Evangelista (pictured at right), 43, model, says she uses Botox because “models are not superhuman. We grow old.”

Model Janice Dickinson, 53, says, “I started Botox the first year it came out. I was the first one in line, and I have had Botox every six months since then.”

Lisa Rinna, 45, formerly in “Days of Our Lives” and “Melrose Place,” says she has Botox shots every three months because “in my family, it’s hereditary to have scowl marks between the eyebrows.” Botox, she says, “smooths everything out.”

Lori Loughlin, 44, of “90210”: “The results are incredible. It makes you look like you’ve been on a really nice vacation. Just really well-rested.”

NO WAY

Many actresses reject the idea of using Botox, but the People article quotes only two of them. One is Courteney Cox, 44, formerly of “Friends,” who says she tried Botox and hated what it did to her.

The other is Teri Hatcher, 43, of “Desperate Housewives”: “In the past, I’ve had Botox and collagen, but I don’t plan to [get it again]. It needs to be okay to have wrinkles as I age.”

Prominent opponents of Botox injections include Cate Blanchett, 39, and Sarah Jessica Parker, 43.

Also missing from the People article are celebrities who are obviously using Botox, but don’t admit it. Among the actresses that cosmetic doctors say are Botox beneficiaries are Madonna, 50, and Nicole Kidman, 41.

They were the two actresses whom readers of this blog labeled “most medically enhanced” in a survey in the post “The world’s most powerful Botoxed celebrities.”

Simon Cowell quip – require plastic surgery for women over 40

August 28th, 2008, 11:00 am by Colin Stewart

Simon CowellPlastic surgery for men?

No, says music mogul and “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell, 48. “It looks ridiculous on guys.”

Plastic surgery for women?

“I’d make it compulsory for every woman over 40.”

That’s not a recent quip, but it’s making the rounds again, including this week’s “Simon Cowell: All Women Over 40 Should Get Plastic Surgery” post in the Make Me Heal blog.

For that comment, Cowell was declared “Idiot of the Day” by one blogger back in 2005.

The British magazine Now is more understanding:

The record producer is proud of his groomed look and believes women of a certain age should take as much pride in their appearance as he does.

Cowell is open about his use of Botox, but says he wants no plastic surgery for himself.

Survey: Who is the most medically enhanced star on the Forbes Celebrity 100?

Cosmetic medicine has helped to enhance many prominent figures who made Forbes magazine’s annual Celebrity 100 listing of the world’s richest and most famous entertainers and athletes.

Botox fans on the list include Madonna, No. 21; Simon Cowell, No. 22; Nicole Kidman, No. 57; and Vanessa Williams, No. 98. Other stars have changed their looks through plastic surgery or other cosmetic procedures.

Celebrity watchers say that each of the top 4 has turned to modern medicine for an upgrade of some sort, if you include the vision-enhancing eye surgery for golfer Tiger Woods, No. 2. The other three at the top — Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie and Beyonce Knowles – have either denied having plastic surgery or have kept mum on the subject.

Below is a partial list of those who have or may have used surgical or injectible enhancements to help them on their way. Attentive readers are encouraged to point out others. The following celebrities, who are discussed below, include some who oppose cosmetic procedures and many who rely on them:

  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Tiger Woods
  • Angelina Jolie
  • Beyonce Knowles
  • Madonna
  • Simon Cowell
  • Kanye West
  • Nicole Kidman
  • Sarah Jessica Parker
  • Cate Blanchett
  • Vanessa Williams
